The study of hadith transmitters ('ilm al-rijāl) is just as important as all the other classical transmitted (naqli) sciences, such as jurisprudence, principles of jurisprudence, and Qur'anic exegesis. 'Ilm al-rijal literally means 'the science of men'; it focuses on evaluating the reliability of people who transmitted hadith narrations, and it aims to categorise traditions into graded levels of authenticity and reliability. The science of narrators is also referred to as al-jarh wa al-ta dīl (discrediting and accrediting), which criticises or accepts narrators of traditions.
