NARRATION 1
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا قَالَ وَيْحَكَ حَرَامَهَا فَتَنَكَّبْهُ.
This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s), about the meaning of restraint from worldly matters. He (the Imam) said, Tie upon you! It is (not difficult to understand) knowing what is unlawful so that you can avoid it.’”
NARRATION 2
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْجَهْمِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) لَيْسَ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا بِإِضَاعَةِ الْمَالِ وَلا تَحْرِيمِ الْحَلالِ بَلِ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَنْ لا تَكُونَ بِمَا فِي يَدِكَ أَوْثَقَ مِنْكَ بِمَا عِنْدَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
‘Zuhd (restraint from worldly matters) is not in wasting one’s belongings or making lawful things unlawful.’”
NARRATION 3
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ مَعْرُوفِ بْنِ خَرَّبُوذَ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (a.s) يَقُولُ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا قَصْرُ الأمَلِ وَشُكْرُ كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ وَالْوَرَعُ عَنْ كُلِّ مَا حَرَّمَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
“I heard ‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s), saying, ‘Zuhd (restraint from worldly matters) in the world is to shorten one’s hopes, give thanks for every bounty and restrain from everything that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made unlawful.’”
