سمعت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) يقول: لا يكون المؤمن مؤمنا حتى يكون خائفا راجيا، ولا يكون خائفا راجيا حتى يكون عاملا لما يخاف ويرجو
Imam Jafar(as) said:
“A believer is not truly a believer until he is both fearful and hopeful — and he is not truly fearful and hopeful until he acts according to that which he fears and hopes for.”

The Astonishing Wisdom from Luqmān’s Counsel to His Son
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَدِيدٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ يُونُسَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ أَوْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ) عليه السلام ) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا كَانَ فِي وَصِيَّةِ لعُمَانَ قَالَ كَانَ فِيهَا الْأَعَاجِيبُ وَ كَانَ أَعْجَبَ مَا كَانَ فِيهَا أَنْ قَالَ لِابْنِهِ خَفِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خِيفَةً لَوْ جِئْتَهُ بِيرٌ الثَّقَلَيْنِ لَعَذَّبَكَ وَارْجُ اللَّهَ رَجَاءَ لَوْ جِئْتَهُ بِذُنُوبِ الثَّقَلَيْنِ لَرَحِمَكَ
Imam jafar(as) was asked:
“What was in the will (waṣiyyah) of Luqmān?”
he replied:
“It contained wondrous things — and the most wondrous among them was this:
He said to his son, ‘Fear Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, with such fear that if you were to come to Him with the good deeds of both the humans and the jinn, He could still punish you. And hope in Allah with such hope that if you were to come to Him with the sins of both the humans and the jinn, He would still have mercy upon you.’”

The Shipwrecked Woman and the Repentant Sinner on the Island
عن علي بن الحسين صلوات الله عليهما [قال] قال إن رجلا ركب البحر بأهله فكسر بهم، فلم ينج ممن كان في السفينة إلا امرأة الرجل، فإنها نجت على لوح من ألواح السفينة حتى ألجأت على جزيرة من جزائر البحر، وكان في تلك الجزيرة رجل يقطع الطريق ولم يدع لله حرمة إلا انتهكها فلم يعلم إلا والمرأة قائمة على رأسه، فرفع رأسه إليها فقال إنسية أم جنية فقالت إنسية، فلم يكلمها كلمة حتى جلس منها مجلس الرجل من أهله فلما إن هم بها اضطربت فقال لها مالك تضطربين، فقالت أفرق (1) من هذا - وأومأت بيدها إلى السماء - قال فصنعت من هذا شيئا، قالت لا وعزته، قال فأنت تفرقين منه هذا الفرق ولم تصنعي من هذا شيئا وانما استكرهك استكراها فأنا والله أولى بهذا الفرق والخوف وأحق منك، قال فقام ولم يحدث شيئا، ورجع إلى أهله وليس له همة إلا التوبة والمراجعة، فبينا هو يمشي إذ صادفه راهب يمشي في الطريق فحميت عليهما الشمس، فقال الراهب للشاب أدع الله يظلنا بغمامة فقد حميت علينا الشمس، فقال الشاب ما أعلم أن لي عند ربي حسنة فأتجاسر على أن أسأله شيئا، قال فأدعو أنا وتؤمن أنت، قال نعم، فأقبل الراهب يدعو والشاب يؤمن، فما كان بأسرع من أن أظلتهما غمامة، فمشيا تحتها مليا من النهار، ثم تفرقت الجادة جادتين، فأخذ الشاب في واحدة وأخذ الراهب في واحدة، فإذا السحابة مع الشاب، فقال الراهب أنت خير مني لك استجيب ولم يستجب لي، فأخبرني ما قصتك، فأخبره بخبر المرأة، فقال غفر لك ما مضى حيث دخلك الخوف، فانظر كيف تكون فيما تستقبل.
Imam zayn al- Abideen(as) narrates a story where he says:
A man once set out to sea with his family, but their ship was wrecked. None of those aboard survived except the man’s wife. She was saved, clinging to one of the planks of the ship, until she was cast upon an island in the middle of the sea.
On that island there lived a man who was a highway robber, who had violated every sacred limit of Allah and committed every sin. He suddenly saw the woman standing before him.
He lifted his head and said, “Are you a human or a jinn?”
She replied, “A human.”
Without speaking another word, he sat with her as a man sits with his wife. But when he intended to approach her, she trembled.
He said, “Why are you trembling?”
She said, “I am afraid of this,” and she pointed toward the sky.
He said, “Have you ever done anything (sinful) because of this fear?”
She said, “No, by His Might.”
He replied, “You fear Him so greatly, though you have not disobeyed Him — and I, who have violated every one of His limits, am more worthy of this fear than you are!”
Then he stood up, did nothing to her, and returned to his home — with no concern in his heart except for repentance and turning back to Allah.
As he was walking on his way, he met a monk traveling on the road. The sun grew hot over them, so the monk said to the young man, “Pray to Allah to shade us with a cloud, for the sun has become intense upon us.”
The young man replied, “I do not know of any good deed I have with my Lord that would give me the courage to ask Him for anything.”
The monk said, “Then I will pray, and you say Āmīn (Amen).”
He said, “Yes.”
So the monk prayed, and the young man said Āmīn. It was not long before a cloud came and shaded them. They walked beneath it for a good part of the day.
Then the road split into two paths — the young man took one, and the monk took the other — and the cloud followed the young man.
The monk said, “You are better than I! Your prayer was answered, not mine. Tell me your story.”
So the young man told him what had happened with the woman.
The monk said, “Your past sins have been forgiven when fear of Allah entered your heart. So now, be mindful of how you live in the future.”
