Imam al-Baqir (A.S) Demonstrates the Wudu of the Prophet (PBUH)
حَكَى لَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) وُضُوءَ رَسُولِ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَدَعَا بِقَدَحٍ فَأَخَذَ كَفّاً مِنْ مَاءٍ فَأَسْدَلَهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ مِنَ الْجَانِبَيْنِ جَمِيعاً ثُمَّ أَعَادَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى فِي الإِنَاءِ فَأَسْدَلَهَا عَلَى يَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى ثُمَّ مَسَحَ جَوَانِبَهَا ثُمَّ أَعَادَ الْيُمْنَى فِي الإِنَاءِ فَصَبَّهَا عَلَى الْيُسْرَى ثُمَّ صَنَعَ بِهَا كَمَا صَنَعَ بِالْيُمْنَى ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِمَا بَقِيَ فِي يَدِهِ رَأْسَهُ وَرِجْلَيْهِ وَلَمْ يُعِدْهُمَا فِي الإِنَاءِ.
Imam al-Bāqir (A.S) once demonstrated for us how the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would perform wudu.
• He asked for a glass of water.
• With some water in the palm of his hand, he allowed it to flow down his face and wiped both sides of his face.
• Then, with some water in the palm of his left hand, he allowed it to flow down his right hand and wiped both sides.
• Next, with some water in the palm of his right hand, he allowed it to flow over his left hand and did as he had done to his right hand.
• Thereafter, with whatever was left on his hand, he wiped his head and his feet.

Imam al-Bāqir (A.S) Explains the Qur’anic Command of Wudu
عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَدَعَا بِطَسْتٍ أَوْ تَوْرٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَغَمَسَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى فَغَرَفَ بِهَا غُرْفَةً فَصَبَّهَا عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَغَسَلَ بِهَا وَجْهَهُ ثُمَّ غَمَسَ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى فَغَرَفَ بِهَا غُرْفَةً فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى ذِرَاعِهِ الْيُمْنَى فَغَسَلَ بِهَا ذِرَاعَهُ مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ إِلَى الْكَفِّ لاَ يَرُدُّهَا إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثُمَّ غَمَسَ كَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى فَأَفْرَغَ بِهَا عَلَى ذِرَاعِهِ الْيُسْرَى مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ وَصَنَعَ بِهَا مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعَ بِالْيُمْنَى ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَدَمَيْهِ بِبَلَلِ كَفِّهِ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ لَهُمَا مَاءً جَدِيداً ثُمَّ قَالَ وَلاَ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ تَحْتَ الشِّرَاكِ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ يا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ أَنْ يَدَعَ شَيْئاً مِنْ وَجْهِهِ إِلاَّ غَسَلَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِغَسْلِ الْيَدَيْنِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ أَنْ يَدَعَ شَيْئاً مِنْ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ إِلاَّ غَسَلَهُ لأَنَّ الله يَقُولُ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرافِقِ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُؤُسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ فَإِذَا مَسَحَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ أَوْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ قَدَمَيْهِ مَا بَيْنَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ إِلَى أَطْرَافِ الأصَابِعِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَهُ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا أَيْنَ الْكَعْبَانِ قَالَ هَاهُنَا يَعْنِي الْمَفْصِلَ دُونَ عَظْمِ السَّاقِ فَقُلْنَا هَذَا مَا هُوَ فَقَالَ هَذَا مِنْ عَظْمِ السَّاقِ وَالْكَعْبُ أَسْفَلُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَقُلْنَا أَصْلَحَكَ الله فَالْغُرْفَةُ الْوَاحِدَةُ تُجْزِئُ لِلْوَجْهِ وَغُرْفَةٌ لِلذِّرَاعِ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِذَا بَالَغْتَ فِيهَا وَالثِّنْتَانِ تَأْتِيَانِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ.
Imam al-Bāqir (A.S) said:
“Allah, the Most Majestic, Most Glorious, says: ‘Believers, when you rise for Salah (prayer), wash your faces and hands.’
He must not have left any part of his face without being washed.
He commanded him to wash his hands up to (from) the elbows. He must not have left his hands without being washed up to (from) the elbows.
It is because Allah says: ‘Wash your faces and hands up to (from) the elbows.’
He (Allah) then says: ‘Wipe your heads and feet up to your ankles.’
If one wipes a part of his head and a part of the backs of his feet between his ankles, it is sufficient.”
We then asked: “What part of the feet is between ankles to the ends of fingers?”
He (the Imam) said:
“It is here, the joint below the bones of the leg.”

Imam al-Bāqir (A.S) on the Sufficiency of Three Handfuls of Water for Wudu
وقال الإمام محمد الباقر (عليه السلام): إن الله وتر يحب الوتر فقد يجزيك من الوضوء ثلاث غرفات: واحدة للوجه واثنتان للذراعين. وتمسح ببلّة يمينك على ناصيتك وما بقي من بلّة يمينك على ظهر قدمك اليمنى، وتمسح ببلّة يسارك على ظهر قدمك اليسرى. قال زُرارة: سأل رجل أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) عن وضوء رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) فحكى له مثل ذلك
Imam al Baqir (A.S) said:
“Allah is odd. He loves odd numbers. Three handfuls of water is sufficient for Wudu’:
• one handful for the face,
• one for the right forearm,
• and one for the left forearm.
With moisture in your right hand, wipe the front portion of your head, and with the remaining moisture on it wipe the back of your right foot. With the moisture in your left hand, wipe the back of your left foot.”
Zurarah has said that Abu Ja‘far (A.S) said:
“Once a man asked Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S) about the Wudu of the Messenger of Allah, and he (Amir al-Mu’minin) demonstrated like this.”

Ears Are Not Part of the Face, and First Wipe the Right Foot
بِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ الأذُنَانِ لَيْسَا مِنَ الْوَجْهِ وَلاَ مِنَ الرَّأْسِ قَالَ وَذُكِرَ الْمَسْحُ فَقَالَ امْسَحْ عَلَى مُقَدَّمِ رَأْسِكَ وَامْسَحْ عَلَى الْقَدَمَيْنِ وَابْدَأْ بِالشِّقِّ الأيْمَنِ.
Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s) who said,
“Ears are not (part) of the face or the head.“ He (Muhammad ibn Muslim) has said that wiping was mentioned, so he (the Imam) said, “You must wipe the front portion of your head, and you must wipe the two feet. You must first wipe the right side (foot).”

Proper Method of Wiping the Feet in Wudu
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْقَدَمَيْنِ كَيْفَ هُوَ فَوَضَعَ كَفَّهُ عَلَى الأصَابِعِ فَمَسَحَهَا إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ إِلَى ظَاهِرِ الْقَدَمِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلاً قَالَ بِإِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِهِ هَكَذَا فَقَالَ لاَ إِلاَّ بِكَفِّهِ.
Muhammad ibn abu Nasr who has said the following:
“I once asked abu al-Hassan, al-Rida (a.s), about wiping the backs of the feet as to how they must be wiped.
He (the Imam) placed the palm of his hand over his toes add wiped to the ankles over the back of the feet.
I then said, ’I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what happens if one places two fingers and wipes up to the ankle?’
He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it must be done with one’s palm.’”

Washing of Feet?!
قَالَ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّكَ تَوَضَّأْتَ فَجَعَلْتَ مَسْحَ الرِّجْلَيْنِ غَسْلاً ثُمَّ أَضْمَرْتَ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْمُفْتَرَضُ لَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ بِوُضُوءٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ ابْدَأْ بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَى الرِّجْلَيْنِ فَإِنْ بَدَا لَكَ غَسْلٌ فَغَسَلْتَ فَامْسَحْ بَعْدَهُ لِيَكُونَ آخِرَ ذَلِكَ الْمُفْتَرَضِ.
“He (the Imam) has said, ‘If you take Wudu’ and instead of wiping your feet wash them, thinking that this is what is obligatory, it is not considered Wudu’.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘First you must wipe your feet. Then if you like to wash them and you did so thereafter wipe them to make it the last obligatory act (of Wudu’).”’
