Hadiths for Category: Interest(Riba)

Imam Jafar Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed repentance is a purification from the filth of sin. Allah said: "O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of riba (usury/interest), if you are believers... [until His saying]... you wrong not, nor are you wronged." [Quran, 2:278-279]. This is what Allah has called His servants to of repentance and what He has promised them of reward. Whoever contradicts what Allah has commanded him regarding repentance, Allah's wrath is upon him, and the Fire becomes more appropriate and deserving for him.”

From Muhammad bin Sinan that Imam Ali bin Musa al-Ridha (peace be upon him) wrote to him in response to his questions: “The reason for prohibiting riba is what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden, and because it leads to corruption of wealth. When a person buys one dirham for two dirhams, the price of one dirham is one dirham while the price of the other is invalid. Thus, buying and selling with riba is a loss in all cases, both for the buyer and the seller. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, prohibited riba for His servants due to the corruption of wealth it causes, just as He prevented giving wealth to the foolish person out of fear it would be corrupted, until sound judgment is observed in him. For this reason, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, prohibited riba and selling one dirham for two dirhams. The reason for the prohibition of riba after clear evidence is because it involves belittling what Allah has made forbidden. It is a major sin after clarification and Allah's prohibition of it. One would only engage in it out of belittling what Allah has made forbidden, and belittling this constitutes entry into disbelief. The reason for prohibiting riba in credit (deferred) transactions is because it leads to the disappearance of good deeds, destruction of wealth, people's desire for profit, their abandonment of giving loans, while loans are acts of kindness. It also leads to corruption, injustice, and the depletion of wealth.”

Hisham bin Al-Hakam asked Imam Jafar Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the reason for prohibiting riba. He said: “If riba were permissible, people would abandon trade and what they need. So Allah prohibited riba to drive people away from the forbidden to the permissible and to trade through buying and selling, so that lending remains between them in loans.”
