Meaning of al-Wāḥid


حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي رَحِمَهُ اَللَّهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى اَلْعَطَّارُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ اَلْجَعْفَرِيِّ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ اَلثَّانِيَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ مَا مَعْنَى اَلْوَاحِدِ قَالَ اَلْمُجْتَمَعُ عَلَيْهِ جَمِيعُ اَلْأَلْسُنِ بِالْوَحْدَانِيَّةِ .


Abū Hāshim al-Jaʿfarī said:

I asked Abū Jaʿfar al-Thānī (Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Jawād) (peace be upon him):
“What is the meaning of al-Wāḥid?”

Imam replied:
“That concerning which all tongues are united in affirming His oneness (al-waḥdāniyyah).”
