Fasting Equalizes the Rich and the Needy
عن هشام بن الحكم، أنه سأل أبا عبد الله عليه السلام عن علة الصيام؟ فقال: إنما فرض الله الصيام ليستوي به الغني والفقير، وذلك أن الغني لم يكن ليجد مس الجوع فيرحم الفقير، لان الغني كلما أراد شيئا قدر عليه، فأراد الله تعالى أن يسوي بين خلقه، وأن يذيق الغني مس الجوع والألم ليرق على الضعيف ويرحم الجائع.
Hisham bin Al-Hakam, asked Imam Jafar(peace be upon him) about the reason for fasting. He said: Allah made fasting obligatory so that the rich and poor would become equal through it, and that is because the rich would not experience the touch of hunger to have mercy on the poor, for whenever the rich person wants something he is able to get it. So Allah the Most High wanted to make His creation equal, and to make the rich taste the touch of hunger and pain so that they would be compassionate towards the weak and have mercy on the hungry.

The Zakat of the Body
عن زرارة، عن الصادق عليه السلام قال: لكل شئ زكاة، وزكاة الأجساد الصيام.
Imam al-Sadiq(as) said:
Everything has a Zakat, and the Zakat of bodies is fasting.

Fasting Teaches Patience and Awareness of Poverty and the Hereafter
عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام فيما كتب إليه من جواب مسائله: علة الصوم لعرفان مس الجوع والعطش، ليكون العبد ذليلا مستكينا مأجورا محتسبا صابرا، ويكون ذلك دليلا له على شدائد الآخرة مع ما فيه من الانكسار له عن الشهوات، واعظا له في العاجل، دليلا على الآجل، ليعلم شدة مبلغ ذلك من أهل الفقر والمسكنة في الدنيا والآخرة.
Imam Reza(as) in response to questions says:
The reason for fasting is to experience the touch of hunger and thirst, so that the servant becomes humble, submissive, rewarded, anticipating reward, and patient. This serves as an indication for him of the hardships of the hereafter, along with what it contains of breaking away from desires, acting as an admonition for him in the present and a guide for the future, so that he may know the extent of hardship faced by the poor and needy in this world and the hereafter.
