The Importance Of Seeking Knowledge
NARRATION 1
قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ أَلا إِنَّ الله يُحِبُّ بُغَاةَ الْعِلْمِ.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim. Surely Allah loves those who seek knowledge.”
“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim. Surely Allah loves those who seek knowledge.”
NARRATION 2
عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ.
Abū ʿAbdillāh[Imam Jafar] (peace be upon him) said:
‘Seeking knowledge is an obligation.’
‘Seeking knowledge is an obligation.’
NARRATION 3
قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) هَلْ يَسَعُ النَّاسَ تَرْكُ الْمَسْأَلَةِ عَمَّا يَحْتَاجُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لا.
Abū al-Ḥasan[Imam Kazim] (peace be upon him) was asked,
‘Are people allowed to refrain from asking about what they need to know?’
He replied, ‘No.’”
‘Are people allowed to refrain from asking about what they need to know?’
He replied, ‘No.’”
NARRATION 4
أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَقُولُ
أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ كَمَالَ الدِّينِ طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ وَالْعَمَلُ بِهِ أَلا وَإِنَّ طَلَبَ الْعِلْمِ أَوْجَبُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ طَلَبِ الْمَالِ إِنَّ الْمَالَ مَقْسُومٌ مَضْمُونٌ لَكُمْ قَدْ قَسَمَهُ عَادِلٌ بَيْنَكُمْ وَضَمِنَهُ وَسَيَفِي لَكُمْ وَالْعِلْمُ مَخْزُونٌ عِنْدَ أَهْلِهِ وَقَدْ أُمِرْتُمْ بِطَلَبِهِ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ فَاطْلُبُوهُ.
Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib(as) said:
“O people, know that the perfection of religion lies in seeking knowledge and acting upon it. Indeed, seeking knowledge is more obligatory upon you than seeking wealth. Wealth has already been apportioned and guaranteed for you — a Just One has divided it among you, guaranteed it, and He will fulfill that promise for you. But knowledge is preserved with those who possess it, and you have been commanded to seek it from its أهل (people qualified in it). So seek it.”
