The Reason for God’s Veiling from Creation
حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد، عن أبيه قال: حدثنا محمد بن بندار، عن محمد ابن علي، عن محمد بن عبد الله الخراساني خادم الرضا قال: قال بعض الزنادقة لأبي الحسن " ع ": لم احتجب الله؟ فقال أبو الحسن عليه السلام: ان الحجاب عن الخلق لكثرة ذنوبهم فأما هو فلا تخفى عليه خافية في آناء الليل والنهار، قال فلم، لا تدركه حاسة البصر؟ قال للفرق بينه وبين خلقه الذين تدركهم حاسة الابصار ثم هو أجل من أن تدركه الابصار أو يحيط به وهم أو يضبطه عقل، قال: فحده لي؟ قال إنه لا يحد، قال لم؟ قال: لأنه كل محدود منتهاه إلى حد، فإذا احتمل التحديد احتمل الزيادة، وإذا احتمل الزيادة احتمل النقصان، فهو غير محدود ولا متزايد ولا متجزئ ولا متوهم.
One of the zindīqs(heretic) said to Imam Ali al-Riḍā (peace be upon him):
“Why is God veiled?”
The Imam (peace be upon him) replied:
“The veiling is from the creation due to the abundance of their sins; as for Him, nothing is hidden from Him at any time—neither in the hours of the night nor of the day.”
The zindīq said:
“Then why can the sense of sight not perceive Him?”
The Imam replied:
“So that there may be a distinction between Him and His creation—those whom the sense of sight can perceive. Moreover, He is far too exalted to be perceived by sight, encompassed by imagination, or confined by intellect.”
The zindīq said:
“Then define Him for me.”
The Imam replied:
“He cannot be defined.”
The zindīq said:
“Why?”
The Imam replied:
“Because everything that is defined has an endpoint. If He were subject to definition, He would be subject to increase; and if subject to increase, He would be subject to decrease. Therefore, He is not limited, does not increase, is not divisible, and is not an object of imagination.”

The Wisdom Behind God’s Veiling from Creation
علي بن حاتم، عن القاسم بن محمد، عن حمدان بن الحسين، عن الحسين بن الوليد، عن عبد الله بن سنان، عن أبي حمزة الثمالي قال: قلت لعلي بن الحسين عليهما السلام: لأي علة حجب الله عز وجل الخلق عن نفسه؟ قال: لان الله تبارك وتعالى بناهم بنية على الجهل فلو أنهم كانوا ينظرون إلى الله عز وجل لما كانوا بالذين يهابونه ولا يعظمونه، نظير ذلك أحدكم إذا نظر إلى بيت الله الحرام أول مرة عظمه فإذا أتت عليه أيام و هو يراه لا يكاد أن ينظر إليه إذا مر به ولا يعظمه ذلك التعظيم.
Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī, who said:
I Asked Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him):
“For what reason did God, Mighty and Exalted, veil the creation from Himself?”
Imam(as) replied:
“Because God—Blessed and Exalted—created them with a constitution inclined toward ignorance. If they were to look upon God, Mighty and Exalted, they would neither fear Him nor revere Him.
The likeness of this is that one of you, when he first looks upon the Sacred House of God (the Kaʿbah), holds it in great awe; but when days pass while he continues to see it, he scarcely looks at it when passing by, nor does he revere it with that same reverence.”
