Hadiths for Category: The Rights of the Teacher over Students

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: "Among the rights of the scholar over you is that you: greet the people generally, but give him a special greeting, sit in front of him, do not point with your hand in his presence, do not signal with your eyes, do not say, 'So-and-so said' in contradiction to his words, do not backbite anyone in his presence, do not whisper in his gathering, do not pull on his garment, do not force yourself on him if he is tired, and do not feel bored from his long companionship. He is like a date palm—waiting to see when something will fall for you from it. Indeed, a believing scholar has a greater reward than one who fasts, prays, and fights in the way of Allah. And when a scholar dies, a gap is created in Islam that nothing can fill until the Day of Judgment."

Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: "When you sit with a scholar, be more eager to listen than to speak. Learn good listening just as you learn good speaking, and do not interrupt anyone's speech."

Imam Zain al-Abidin (peace be upon him) said: "The right of the one who trains you with knowledge is: to revere him, to respect his gathering, to listen to him well, to turn towards him fully, not to raise your voice above his, not to answer anyone who asks him about something until he is the one who answers, not to speak with anyone in his gathering, not to backbite anyone in his presence, to defend him if he is mentioned with evil in your presence, to conceal his faults, to highlight his virtues, not to sit with his enemy, and not to show enmity to his friend. If you do that, the angels of Allah will bear witness for you that you intended him and learned his knowledge for the sake of Allah, Glorious is His Name, not for the people."
