We read in Kitāb al-Maʿrifah wa al-Tārīkh, Vol 2, P751:
Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Owaisi narrated to us, Ibrahim bin Sa’d narrated from Shu’bah, from Abu Awn Muhammad bin Ubaidullah al-Thaqafi, from Abu Salih al-Hanafi, who said:
I saw Ali bin Abi Talib take the Mushaf (Quran), place it on his head until I could see its pages rustling, and then he said:
"O Allah, they have prevented me from implementing what is in it among the people, so grant me the reward of what is in it. O Allah, I have become weary of them, and they have become weary of me; I have come to hate them, and they have come to hate me. They have forced me into a nature and character that were never known in me. So replace them with people better than them for me, and replace me with someone worse than me for them. O Allah, cause their hearts to die like salt dissolving in water."
