أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن خلف بن المرزبان، حدثني الخاقاني المعروف بحماحم عن ابن أبي ناظرة ((أَنَّ ثلاثةَ مَشايِخَ حضَرُوا المسجِدَ الجامِعَ بالجانِبِ الغَرْبِيّ في يَوْمِ جُمْعةٍ، فقالَ واحِدٌ منهم لآِخَرَ يَلِيْه: جُعِلْتُ فِداكَ أيُّهُما أفضلُ؛ مُعاويةُ أو عيسى بنُ مريمَ؟ قالَ: لا، واللهِ ما أدْرِي، وسمِع الثالِثُ فقالَ: وَيْلَكَ، تَقِيْسُ كاتِبَ الوَحْيِ إلَى نبِيِّ النَّصارَى؟)).
Ahmad told us, Muhammad told us, Muhammad b. Khalaf b. al-Marzaban told us, al-Khaqani known as Hamahem told me, from Ibn Abi Nazira:
“Three elders were present in the congregational mosque on the western side on a Friday. One of them said to the one beside him: ‘May I be your ransom, which of the two is better — Mu'awiya or Jesus b. Maryam?’ He replied: ‘By Allah, I do not know.’ The third heard this and said: ‘Woe to you! Do you compare the writer of revelation to the prophet of the Christians?’”

Muhadarat al-Udabaa' by al-Raghib al-Asfahani, Vol. 4, pg. 137:
وقال بعض عوام الناصبة معاوية ليس بمخلوق، فقيل: كيف؟ قال: لأنه كاتب الوحي والوحي ليس بمخلوق وكاتبه منه.
And some of the common people among the nawasib said: “Mu‘awiya is not created.”
It was asked: “How so?”
He replied: “Because he was the scribe of revelation, and revelation is not created, and its scribe is part of it.”

Imam Ali destroys Muawiya
Ansab al-Ashraf Vol. 5, pg. 119:
وزعموا أن مُعَاوِيَة كتب إلى علي رضي اللَّه تعالى عنهما: يا أبا الحسن، إن لي فضائل كثيرة، كان أبي سيدًا فِي الجاهلية، وولاني عُمَر فِي الإسلام، وأنا صهر رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وخال المؤمنين، وأحد كتاب الوحي، فلما قرأ علي كتابه قَالَ:
أبالفضائل يفخر علي ابن آكله الأكباد؟! يا غلام اكتب، فكتب:
محمد النبي أخي وصهري ... وحمزة سيد الشهداء عمي
وجعفر الذي يمسي ويضحي ... يطير مع الملائكة ابن أمي
وبنت محمد سكني وعرسي ... مسوط لحمها بدمي ولحمي
وسبطا أحمد ولداي منها ... فأيكم له سهم كسهمي
سبقتكم إلى الإسلام طرًا ... غلامًا قبل حين أوان حلمي
فلما قرأه مُعَاوِيَة قَالَ: يا غلام مزق الكتاب لئلا يقرأه أهل الشام فيميلوا إليه دوني قالوا: وانتحل السيد الحميري هذه الأبيات فأدخلها فِي شعره
"They claimed that Muawiyah wrote to Ali, may Allah be pleased with both of them, saying: 'O Abu al-Hasan, I have many virtues. My father was a leader in the pre-Islamic era, and Umar treated me well in Islam. I am the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the uncle of the believers. I am also one of the recipients of divine revelation.' When Ali read his letter, he said, 'Should a person boast about virtues when he is the son of liver-eater? O young man, write:'
Muhammad, the Prophet, is my brother and my father-in-law... Hamza, the chief of martyrs, is my uncle. Ja'far, who flies with the angels, is my cousin. The daughter of Muhammad is my wife and my joy. The son of Ahmad is my son through her. So, who among you has an arrow like mine? I preceded you to Islam ahead of time, a youth even before my wisdom matured.'
When Muawiyah read it, he said, 'O young man, tear the letter so that the people of Syria do not read it and incline towards him.' They said, 'The poet Al-Himyari composed these verses and included them in his poetry.'"

أخبرنا محمّد بن أحمد بن رزق البزّار قال نبأنا أبو إسحاق إبراهيم بن محمّد بن يحيى النّيسابوريّ قال نا أبو عمرو أحمد بن محمّد بن أحمد الحيري قراءة عليه [بمكة] قال نبأنا عثمان بن سعيد قال سمعت الرّبيع بن نافع يقول: معاوية بن أبي سفيان ستر أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فإذا كشف الرجل الستر اجترئ على ما وراءه
Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Razq al-Bazzar informed us, he said: Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Naysaburi reported to us, he said: Abu Amr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hairi read it [in Mecca]. He said: 'Uthman b. Sa'id reported to us, he said: I heard Rabi'ah ibn Nafi' saying: Muawiya b. Abi Sufyan is the cover of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, (SAW) so if a man uncovered the cover, that which is behind it will be violated.

Muawiyas happiness at Imam Hasans death

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِرْقٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصَفَّى، ثنا بَقِيَّةُ، عَنْ بَحِيرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ، قَالَ: وَفْدَ الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ مَعْدِي كَرِبٍ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ - رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَسَدِ مِنْ أَهْلِ قِنَّسْرِينَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ رحمه الله، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ لِلْمِقْدَامِ: أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ تُوُفِّيَ؟ قَالَ: فَاسْتَرْجَعَ الْمِقْدَامُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ: أَتَرَاهَا مُصِيبَةً؟ قَالَ: وَلِمَ لَا أَرَاهَا مُصِيبَةً؟ وَقَدْ وَضَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي حِجْرِهِ فَقَالَ: «هَذَا مِنِّي، وَحُسَيْنٌ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ» ، فَقَالَ لِلْأَسَدِيِّ: مَا تَقُولُ أَنْتَ؟ فَقَالَ: جَمْرَةٌ أَطْفَأَهَا اللهُ، فَقَالَ الْمِقْدَامُ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَلَا أَبْرَحُ الْيَوْمَ حَتَّى أَغَيِظَكَ الْيَوْمَ وَأُسْمِعَكَ مَا تَكْرَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنْ أَنَا صَدَقْتَ فَصَدِّقْنِي، وَإِنْ أَنَا كَذَبْتُ فَكَذِّبْنِي، فَقَالَ: أَفْعَلُ، فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ، هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم «يَنْهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: وَأَنْشُدُكَ بِاللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُ «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكَ بِاللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُ «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ جُلُودِ السِّبَاعِ وَالرُّكُوبِ عَلَيْهَا؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: «فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ هَذَا كُلَّهُ فِي بَيْتِكَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ» ، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: «قَدْ عَرَفْتُ أَنِّي لَنْ أَنْجُوَ مِنْهَا الْيَوْمَ يَا مِقْدَامُ» ، قَالَ خَالِدٌ: وَأَمَرَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ بِمَالٍ وَلَمْ يَأْمُرْ لِصَاحِبِهِ، وَفَرَضَ لِابْنِهِ، قَالَ: فَفَرَّقَهَا الْمِقْدَامُ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَلَمْ يُعْطِ الْأَسَدِيَّ شَيْئًا مِمَّا أَخَذَ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَالَ: «أَمَّا الْمِقْدَامُ فَرَجُلٌ كَرِيمٌ بَسِيطٌ يَدَيْهِ، وَأَمَّا الْأَسَدِيُّ فَرَجُلٌ حَسَنُ الْإِمْسَاكِ لِنَفْسِهِ»
Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. Irq al Himsi narrated to us, Muhammad b. Musaffa narrated to us, Baqiyya narrated, from Buhair b. Saad, from Khalid b. Maadan, who said:
The delegation of al Miqdam b. Maadi Karib and Amr b. al Aswad — a man from al Asad from the people of Qinnasrin, from the companions of the Prophet — came to Muawiya.
Muawiya said to al Miqdam: “Do you not know that al Hasan b. Ali has passed away?”
Al Miqdam said inna lillah… (he expressed sorrow).
Muawiya then said to him: “Do you consider it a calamity?”
He replied: “Why should I not consider it a calamity? The Messenger of Allah placed him in his lap and said: ‘This one is from me, and Husayn is from Ali.’”
Then Muawiya said to the Asadi man: “What do you say?”
He replied: “A burning coal that Allah has extinguished.”
Al Miqdam said: “As for me, I will not leave today until I anger you and make you hear what you dislike.
If I speak truth, then confirm it; and if I lie, then deny it.”
Muawiya said: “I will.”
Al Miqdam said: “I ask you by Allah — did you hear the Messenger of Allah forbid wearing gold?”
Muawiya said: “Yes.”
He said: “I ask you by Allah — do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade wearing silk?”
He said: “Yes.”
He said: “I ask you by Allah — do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade the skins of predatory animals and riding upon them?”
He said: “Yes.”
Al Miqdam then said: “By Allah, I have seen all of this in your house, O Muawiya.”
Muawiya said: “I knew I would not escape today, O Miqdam.”
Khalid said: Muawiya ordered money to be given to al Miqdam, but he did not order anything for his companion. He also assigned a stipend for Miqdam’s son. Al Miqdam distributed all of it among his companions and did not give the Asadi man anything of what he received.
This reached Muawiya, and he said: “As for al Miqdam, he is a generous man with open hands. As for the Asadi, he is a man who holds tightly to what he has.”

Mu'awiya the donkey
Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar by al-Tahawi, Vol. 2, pg. 452 - 453, Report # 1610:
قيل له: قد روي عن ابن عباس في فعل معاوية هذا ما يدل على إنكاره إياه عليه.
وذلك.
أن أبا غسان مالك بن يحيى الهمداني حدثنا قال: ثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، قال: أنا عمران بن حدير، عن عكرمة أنه قال: كنت مع ابن عباس عند معاوية نتحدث حتى ذهب هزيع من الليل، فقام معاوية، فركع ركعة واحدة، فقال ابن عباس: "من أين ترى أخذها الحمار؟.
It was said to him: It has been narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding this action of Mu‘awiya what indicates that he disapproved of it from him. And that is:
Abu Ghassan Malik b. Yahya al-Hamdani narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd al-Wahhab b. ‘Ata narrated to us; he said: ‘Imran b. Hudayr narrated to me, from ‘Ikrima, that he said: I was with Ibn ‘Abbas by Mu‘awiya, talking until a portion of the night had passed. Mu‘awiya then stood and prayed one rak‘a, so Ibn ‘Abbas said: “From where do you think the donkey learned that?”

Waqi’at Siffin pg. 359:
قال : وفي قتل هاشم بن عتبة يقول أبو الطفيل عامر بن واثلة ، وهو من الصحابة ، وقيل إنه آخر من بقى من صحب رسول الله صلى الله عليه ، وشهد مع علي عليه السلام صفين ، وكان من مخلصي
الشيعة :
يا هاشم الخير جزيت الجنة قاتلت في الله عدو السنة والتارك الحق وأهل الضنة أعظم بما فزت به من منة صيرت السيف كساي شنة ياليت أهلي قد علوني رنة من ثوببة وعمة وكنة
He said: Regarding the killing of Hashim ibn Utbah, Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathilah said he was one of the Companions, and it is said that he was the last surviving Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He fought alongside Ali, peace be upon him, at Siffin and was among his most devoted followers from the Shia.
O Hashim the Righteous, may you be rewarded with Paradise, You fought in the cause of Allah against the enemy of the Sunnah, Against those who abandoned the truth and the people of miserliness, How great is the blessing you attained! You made the sword my garment and my covering, Oh, how I wish my family could hear my cry, From my cloak, my turban, and my veil.

Enemy of the sunnah
Al-Isti’ab fi Ma’rifat al-Ashab pg 747:
وفيه يقولُ أبو الطُّفَيلِ عامرُ بنُ واثِلةَ:
يا هاشمَ الخيرِ جُزِيتَ الجَنَّة
قاتَلتَ في اللَّهِ عَدُوَّ السُّنَّهْ
أفْلِحْ بما فُزْتَ به مِن مِنَّه
In it, Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathilah says:
O Hashim of goodness, may you be rewarded with Paradise You fought in the cause of Allah against the enemy of the Sunnah. Rejoice in what you have attained of divine grace

Muawiya changes salat
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq, Vol. 2, pg. 381, Hadith # 2700:
عبد الرزاق، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُشَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ حَفْصِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ صَلَّى بِالْمَدِينَةِ لِلنَّاسِ الْعَتَمَةَ، فَلَمْ يَقْرَأُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ﴾ [الفاتحة : ١]، وَلَمْ يُكَبِّرْ بَعْضَ هَذَا التَّكْبِيرِ الَّذِي يُكَبِّرُ النَّاسَ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ نَادَاهُ مَنْ سَمِعَ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالُوا: يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ، أَسَرَقْتَ الصَّلَاةَ أَمْ نَسِيتَ ؟ أَيْنَ ﴿بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ﴾ [الفاتحة: ١] وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ حِينَ تَهْوِي سَاجِدًا؟ فَلَمْ يَعُدْ مُعَاوِيَةُ لِذَلِكَ بَعْدُ.
‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who said: ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Uthman b. Khushaym told me, from ‘Abd Allah b. Abi Bakr b. Hafs b. ‘Umar b. Sa‘d, that Mu‘awiyah led the people in the night (‘Isha) prayer in Medina, and he did not recite “In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate” [al-Fatiha: 1], nor did he make some of the takbirs (saying “Allahu Akbar”) that people usually make.
When he finished, those of the Muhajirun and Ansar who heard that called out to him and said:
“O Mu‘awiyah, have you stolen the prayer, or did you forget? Where is ‘In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate’, and ‘God is the Greatest’ when you go down in prostration?”
So Mu‘awiyah never repeated that afterward.
