Ibn Taymiyyah said in his book Minhāj al-Sunnah (vol. 7, pp. 137–138):
“Fourth: Allah has informed [us] that He will grant affection (wudd) to those who believe and do righteous deeds, and this is a true promise from Him. It is well known that Allah has placed love for the Companions in the heart of every Muslim—especially the Caliphs, may Allah be pleased with them—particularly Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. For the general body of the Companions and the Followers (the Tābiʿūn) loved them, and they were the best of generations.
This, however, was not the case with ʿAlī, for many of the Companions and the Followers disliked him, reviled him, and fought against him.”
