Aisha’s non-mahram breastfeeding

Aisha and Abdul qadir Jilani

Allamah Muhammad Yahya Tazafi:
Abdul Qadir Jilani states I saw myself in a dream sitting in the lap of the mother of the faithful Aisha and that I was suckling milk from her right breast, she then fed me from her left breast. At that point the Prophet (saw) appeared and said 'Aisha he's my real son, in a literal sense'

According to the hadith of the prophet his incident is real because he saw the prophet in his dream...

Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Ali said in his book Şahih Sunan Abi Dāwūd, vol. 6, pp. 301-302:

"'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, used to instruct the daughters of her sisters and the daughters of her brothers to breastfeed whoever 'A'ishah wanted to see her and enter upon her, even if he was an adult, with five sucklings, and then he would be allowed to enter upon her."

Al-Albānī said it is authentic

حدثنا يعقوب قال ثنا أبي عن ابن إسحق قال حدثني عبدالله بن أبي بكر بن عمرو بن حزم عن عمرة بنت عبدالرحمن عن عائشة زوج النبي الله قالت: لقد أنزلت آية الرجم ورضعات الكبير عشراً، فكانت في ورقة تحت سرير في بيتي، فلما اشتكى رسول الله له تشاغلنا بأمره ودخلت دويبة لنا فأكلتها.

Ya‘qub narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Amr bin Hazm narrated to me from Amra bint Abd al-Rahman, from Aisha, the wife of the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him), who said: “The Verse of stoning and of breastfeeding an adult were revealed and were written on a paper under my bed. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fell ill, we became preoccupied with his condition, and a small animal of ours came in and ate it.”

"Abd al-Razzaq [narrated] from Ma'mar that when the wives of the Prophet (S) would breastfeed an adult, he was then allowed to enter upon them. This ruling was specific to the wives of the Prophet (S), and for all other people it does not apply except what occurs in childhood (i.e., breastfeeding of an infant)."

The distinction is rebutted by what is narrated from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she breastfed an adult, thereby making him unlawful (to marry). If it had been forbidden, she would not have done so, and none of the Companions objected to her; thus it amounted to a consensus on invalidating this distinction. This was stated by al-Qarāfī.

'Umari Scholar

Imam Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Idris al-Shanhaji al-Qarāfi (d. 684 AH) said:

'A'ishah breastfed an adult male, making him mahram (in marriage) to her. If it were forbidden, she would not have done so, and none of the Companions objected to her action.

'Umari scholar

Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn 'Ashūr (d. 1284 AH) states:

A ishah, the Mother of the Believers, whenever she wished for someone to enter upon her from behind the veil, would breastfeed him. She interpreted this based on the Prophet's permission to Sahla, the wife of Abū Hudhayfah. However, the Mothers of the Believers did not agree with her on this view and refused to allow anyone to enter upon them in such a manner. This opinion was also held by al-Layth ibn Sa'd, who ruled in favor of the effectiveness of Rida' al-Kabir (adult breastfeeding). However, Abū Mūsā al-Ash' arī later retracted his fatwa after initially endorsing it.

Umari Scholar

Shaykh Mūsā Shāhīn Lāshin states:

'A'ishah held the view that breastfeeding an adult establishes mahramiyyah. She actually breastfed a young man, and he would then enter upon her. However, the rest of the Mothers of the Believers rejected this view.
