Amr narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Harun narrated to us, who said my father narrated to me, who said Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me, who said Buraydah ibn Sufyan ibn Abi Furwah al-Aslami narrated to me, from his father, from Salamah ibn Amr ibn al-Akwa’, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Bakr al-Siddiq with his banner to one of the forts of Khaybar. He fought but returned without achieving victory, having struggled greatly.

The next day, the Prophet ﷺ sent Umar b. al-Khattab, who also fought but returned without achieving victory, having struggled greatly.

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ aid: “Tomorrow, I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and through whom Allah will grant victory. He is not a coward.”

Salamah continued: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then summoned Ali <:aAS:939691020076056596> , who was suffering from an eye ailment. The Prophet ﷺ pat into his eyes and then said: “Take this banner and proceed with it until Allah grants you victory.”

Salamah said: By Allah, he went forth running quickly, and we followed behind him, tracing his footsteps, until he planted the banner in a pile of stones beneath the fort.

A Jew looked down at him from the top of the fort and asked, “Who are you?”
Ali replied, “I am Ali ibn Abi Talib.”

The Jew said, “You have been victorious, by what was revealed to Musa (Moses, peace be upon him)”—or something similar.

Salamah concluded: Ali did not return until Allah granted victory through him. May Allah be pleased with him.
