Hadith Scan
أنزل الله تعالى في الخمر ثلاث آيات، أولها يَسْئَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ، فكان المسلمون بين شارب وتارك، إلى أن شرب رجل ودخل في الصلاة فهجر، فنزلت: يا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكارى، فشربها من شرب من المسلمين، حتى شربها عمر فأخذ لحي بعير فشج رأس عبد الرحمن بن عوف ثم قعد ينوح على قتل بدر بشعر الأسود بن عبد يغوث:
وكائن بالقليب قليب بدر … من الفتيان والشرب الكرام
وكائن بالقليب قليب بدر … من الشيزى المكلل بالسنام
أيوعدنا ابن كبشة أن سنحيا … وكيف حياة أصداء وهام
أيعجز أن يرد الموت عنّي … وينشرني إذا بليت عظامي
ألا من مبلغ الرّحمن عنيّ … بأني تارك شهر الصيام
فقل لله يمنعني شرابي … وقل لله يمنعني طعامي
فبلغ ذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فخرج مغضبا يجر رداءه، فرفع شيئا كان في يده ليضربه، فقال: أعوذ بالله من غضب الله ورسوله.
فأنزل الله تعالى: إِنَّما يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطانُ - إلى قوله- فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ، فقال عمر: انتهينا.
Allah revealed three verses regarding alcohol. The first was, {They ask you about wine and gambling,} so some Muslims would drink while others abstained. Then, one man drank and went to pray, but he spoke incoherently, so the verse was revealed: {O you who believe! Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated.} Muslims continued drinking, some more than others, until 'Umar drank and struck 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf on the head with a camel's jawbone, causing a wound. Then, he sat down reciting poetry, mourning the deaths of the warriors of Badr with the lines of al-Aswad b. 'Abd Yaghūth:
"How many noble youths lay in the well of Badr,
How many noble youths lay in the well of Badr,
They donned the garments of sables, adorned with camel humps,
Does the son of Kabshah promise us life,
How can one live after being just bones and dust,
How can he prevent death from reaching me,
Or revive me after my bones are decayed,
O messenger of the All-Merciful, tell Him
That I have abandoned the fasting of Ramadan,
Say to Allah, He has forbidden my drink,
Say to Allah, He has forbidden my food."
This reached the Prophet (SAW), who, angry, stormed out, dragging his cloak behind him. He raised something in his hand to strike 'Umar, who said, "I seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger."
Then Allah revealed: {Satan's plan is to stir up enmity and hatred between you, through intoxicants and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not then abstain?} 'Umar then said, "We have abstained."
