Tafsir of Quran

In Shia Islam, "Tafsir" refers to the interpretation and commentary of the Quran. It is an essential field of study for understanding the meanings and messages conveyed in the holy book. Shia Muslims believe that the Quran holds profound knowledge and divine guidance and that understanding its meanings is essential for their spiritual and moral development.

Shia Tafsir is based on the teachings and interpretations of the infallible Imams, who are considered to be the rightful successors of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in Shia theology. These Imams are believed to possess divine knowledge and insight into the deeper meanings of the Quranic verses.

Shia Tafsir relies on a combination of sources, including:

Hadiths:
Traditions and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad and the Imams. Interpretations of the Imams: Shia scholars consult the recorded statements and explanations provided by the Imams on various Quranic verses.

Historical context:
Understanding the historical circumstances and events surrounding the revelation of specific Quranic verses is crucial in Shia Tafsir.

Linguistic analysis:
Examining the Arabic language and grammar to extract the intended meanings.

Prominent Shia Tafsir works include "Tafsir al-Qummi," "Tafsir al-Ayyashi," "Tafsir al-Mizan" by Allama Sayyid Muhammad Hussain Tabatabai, and "Tafsir al-Burhan" by Sayyid Hashim al-Bahrani, among others.

It is important to note that Shia Tafsir may differ in some aspects from Sunni Tafsir, as the two branches of Islam have different theological perspectives and historical interpretations. Tafsir in both Sunni and Shia traditions aims to deepen believers' understanding of the Quran and its teachings, and it continues to be an integral part of Islamic scholarship and education.

Tafsir al-Qummi: Tafsir al-Qummi, written by 'Ali b. Ibrahim al-Qummi, is one of the earliest and most important Shi'a Qur'anic commentaries. It is based on hadith, offering interpretations focused on the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) and esoteric meanings. The commentary explains difficult verses, occasions of revelation, and legal rulings, while defending the teachings of the Twelve Imams (a). It remains a foundational text in Shi'a exegesis, widely referenced by later scholars.

Tafsir al-BurhanAl-Burhān fī Tafsīr al-Qurʾān, authored by al-Sayyid Hashim al-Bahrani, is a significant Shi'a Qur'anic commentary rooted in narrative tradition. Written in the Akhbari style, it discusses Islamic sciences, Qur'anic stories, prophetic hadiths, and the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt (a).

Tafsir al-Ayyashi: Tafsir al-‘Ayyashi, written by Muhammad b. Mas'ud al-‘Ayyashi, is a significant Shi'a hadith-based Qur'anic exegesis from the Minor Occultation period. It interprets the Qur'an through hadith, focusing particularly on jurisprudential aspects, especially the verses of rulings (Ayat al-Ahkam).
